Search engine optimization (SEO) experts worth your hard-earned money know that content-rich, well-designed web sites attract high rankings. They also know that a sensible overall marketing strategy is your best bet for web success. However, whether we like it or not, SEO experts are also human and they can engage in certain questionable practices. Here are some of them:

Using "hidden" text that is not really hidden - Web travelers can't see or read hidden text on your web page but search engines can. SEO consultants who recommend hiding text may suggest loading invisible keywords on the page or hiding keyword-rich text behind layers or images.

You should know that the big search engines where your readers will most likely originate from view hidden text as "search spam." They will penalize your web site for implementing this. It may fool the search engines the first time but upon viewing hidden text in your web site, they will usually ban it from their searches. Well made, content-rich web sites are good performers when it comes to search results. Things the user can't see will be a red flag for search engines.

Using redirects - There are legitimate reasons to use redirects but doing so to obtain a high search engine ranking is not one of them. SEO experts who insist on making information-rich content for a page and then redirecting it to another page in your web site don't care about you. This is a usual practice that is often penalized by search engines.

There are good reasons for and ways to use redirects. Still, anything but a permanent redirect is bad for your web site. If you've decided to change the domain name and you don't want to lose the content you've already made, use robot exclusion tags for this purpose to minimize being penalized.
